Track 1: The gaming console Nintendo fans have all been waiting for is finally here!

The Nintendo Switch has been making international news for the past several months leading up to its recent release on March third, 2017. Nintendo’s newest gaming device was sold out via pre-orders not long after it went on sale, leaving many gamers longing for it. The console which sells for around 300 dollars features the ability to take your gaming experience from your TV to your hands. (27)

However, one of the biggest selling points for the Nintendo Switch is that it will be able to play third party games in the future. This decision could really turn the tides in the gaming world back in favor of the company. (15)

SUNY Oneonta Sophomore, Joseph Incorvaia, is an avid gamer who has some thoughts on this new feature.

Soundbite 1: “I think that’s a very smart business idea. At the same time, it can be a little bit risky. The pros are that people will think, ‘Wow, I can play Nintendo games and other console’s games too.” People will question why to even buy other consoles.”   :14

Track 2: When asked about the cons, Joe responded by saying, (10)

Soundbite 2: “The cons include non-Nintendo fans not wanting to play all the Nintendo games. Also, games will end up being more exclusive in the future if other consoles see that they’re not selling as much over it.”  :11

Track 3 (future): Up until the Switch, Nintendo was out of the of the next generation gaming market. Although the company came in late, it made a strong first impression. We look forward to seeing how the console does when third-party games are released for the Nintendo Switch. (12)

Track 1: President Trump's budget proposal defunds an asset to society.

On March sixteenth, President Donald Trump published blueprints for the federal budget. Since its release, citizens have been up in arms due to disbursement changes toward the arts, humanities, and public media.

The budget plan aims to eliminate sixty-two different agencies, including independent commissions such as the Nationals Endowment for the Arts and Huminites as well as the Corporation for Public Broadcast. These cuts would be made in favor of an increase in capital toward homeland security. While this elimination of media-based funds would deal devastating blows to stations such as PBS and NPR, it is the public that will be affected the most.

SUNY Oneonta Junior, Meredith Hammerslag, is an activist in opposition to the current budget proposal. When asked about the importance of the arts, she had this to say,

Soundbite 1: “The arts are important because we want to be well-rounded humans, and not necessarily every person is good at science or math. It gives them an outlet for creative abilities, and honestly, it is just fun.” :15

Track 2: The current state of the budget forces the public to choose between the humanities and national security. When asked about the precedent of protection over expression, Meredith said,

Soundbite 2: “If we get rid of public media, slash, the arts, there’s nothing really for homeland security to protect since there’s nothing worth protecting.” :11

Track 3: With a nation divided over what American values currently are, it may be easy to prioritize safety over artistry. However, Meredith makes an important point about the people favoring protection.

Soundbite 3: “A lot of people aren’t paying attention, and these people will see more money for homeland security and defense and think it is great, even though it is not even a lot of money. It’s like adding one drop of water to the ten-gallon bucket.” :16

Track 4 (future): Considering the elimination of so many other agencies, homeland security will likely see a large increase following the budget’s revision in the near future. Hopefully, it will not be at the expense of news networks and entertainment that Americans across the country rely on.
